LWB-Guatemala
In one month, LWB students and professionals will arrive in Guatemala to begin an eleven day service trip to the area! While in Guatemala, the group will visit a Guatemalan publishing house and spend a week working at the Asturias Academy Library in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Currently, LWB students and participants have been working on year long projects that include curriculum support and information literacy and the library lending program. In Guatemala, the group plans to work with students and staff at the library to promote literacy and reading, while engaging in programming and planning projects. Before and during the trip, we will be blogging about our experiences. Please follow along here.

On the west coast, Marymount College (Los Angeles) students enrolled in the sociology course “The Home, School, and Community” adopted LWB as their service learning project. Not only are the students fundraising in support of the Guatemala Librarian Stipend, but they are learning about education, literacy, and libraries in LWB areas of current and emerging focus.

LWB-Ghana
Our Research Team will be publishing regularly on our website about the work we’re doing over the Spring and Summer leading to our first set of recommendations for our partner, Libraries Across Africa. The inaugural post was written by Whitney Spencer of Dalhousie University, who is examining how libraries are used as space and could be used as space in Africa. We’d also like to thank the University of Ottawa MIS program and the University of Toronto MI program for supporting Rebecca Ross and Brittany Medeiros in pursuing their investigations through reading courses this summer. Our goal is to mobilize students to work on initiatives through a service learning model, which, in its ideal, dedicates time and space in the curriculum for this kind of experiential learning.

U of Ottawa: Unconference: Non-profits in action
Congratulations to our uOttawa committee for the excellent program they assembled and offered in Ottawa on March 21st!

This unconference brought together other like-minded non-profits (such as SchoolBox and Tanzania Village Link) to speak about their work supporting education and literacy in the world. Read the article in La Rotunde here!

McGill: Guatemala Fundraiser

McGill held a bake sale to support the LWB Guatemala Project. It was very successful - a huge thanks to the McGill Community!
